Grow a Row, Give a Row!

Grow a Row, Give a Row

Everyone is eager to put in a garden this year, even folks who have never before planted a seed!  This is great news because we can collectively ease the stress on our supply chain, while enjoying the benefits of growing our own food.  In the spirit of planting Victory Gardens for self-sufficiency, we also have an excellent opportunity to grow a little extra to help feed local families who are struggling through this pandemic.

Share Your Extra Bounty

Did you know that you can donate extra produce from your garden to food banks and food pantries?  The California Good Samaritan Food Donation Act expands existing legal protection to those who donate food in good faith for human consumption.  As the weather heats up and our gardens start producing, you can drop off extra garden bounty at one of the many food pantries around Lake County.  Lake County Food Resources maintains a list of distribution locations, including food pantries at local churches, who are also open for donations.  Operating hours are dynamic these days, it is always a good idea to call ahead to find out drop-off times.  Donated produce should be suitably ripe, relatively clean, and the high quality that you would serve your family.  Even small donations will make a difference!

Help Feed Our Community

As a home gardener, you grow your own food because you understand the benefits to your health, and you know just how darn good it tastes!  Consider putting in a few extra plants this season, and pass the garden bounty along to your community.  There are local families facing food insecurity, and given our COVID health and economic crisis, the need for food will only increase.  A run-away zucchini, an abundance of green-beans, or a bountiful haul of cucumbers will not only feed our neighbors, but contribute to improving the overall health of our county.  Grow a Row for your family, Give a Row to your community!
